With modern technology today, the replacement of natural wood with engineered wood has been frequently advised and utilized by modern families and architects for interior design materials.

Engineered wood is a type of pressed wood that uses glue or chemicals combined with wood particles to create a complete wood panel. Engineered wood currently consists of two basic components: the surface finish and the core material.

The surface finishes include types such as: melamine, laminate, acrylic, 2K paint, and veneer.

The wood core consists of types such as: MFC, MDF, HDF, Picomat wood-plastic composite, plywood, and CDF. The quality of the wood core material generally becomes more superior down the list.

Engineered wood is highly favored in interior design materials because its cost is lower than natural wood, yet it is very easy to process, and offers diverse patterns and colors.

When using engineered wood, the wood material in interior design still maintains the beauty of the house and is highly suitable for projects, whether modern or classic.

Next, 3A Design will list the types of engineered wood core materials commonly used in interior design materials for your easy selection!

1. MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard)

This is an industrial wood made from a core of particle board, with the core made from short-term industrial trees such as eucalyptus, acacia, rubber trees… After being harvested, these trees are crushed into wood chips, then combined with specialized glues and pressed with high pressure to have a standard thickness such as 18mm, 25mm…

There are 2 types of MFC core wood: regular MFC and moisture-proof MFC. With moisture-proof MFC, it is usually distinguished by adding green color and some moisture-proof additives.

2. MDF Wood (Medium Density Fiberboard)

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a type of fiberboard with medium density. The wood core is also made from short-term industrial wood species, but the fibers are ground finer and combined with additives to be pressed into wood panels with standard thicknesses such as 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, etc.

A characteristic of MDF is that it has a very flat and smooth surface, making it an interior design material with very high aesthetic appeal, and it is easy to press other materials onto its surface or apply paint to the product.

Similar to MFC, MDF interior design wood material also comes in two types: regular and moisture-resistant (chống ẩm). The moisture-resistant MDF product has added waterproofing agents and is usually dyed blue for distinction.

3. HDF Wood (High Density Fiberboard)

HDF (High Density Fiberboard) is a type of fiberboard that is also finely ground and combined with additives and moisture protection agents, similar to MFC and MDF. However, it is pressed at an extremely high intensity—higher than both MFC and MDF.

HDF comes in two types: moisture-resistant (chống ẩm) and super moisture-resistant (siêu chống ẩm). The super moisture-resistant type is named Black HDF because it is dyed black for distinction. Black HDF offers extremely good resistance to moisture and water, and has excellent thermal insulation properties because it is pressed at a very high intensity.

HDF is an interior design wood material commonly used for kitchen and bedroom products.

HDF has high rigidity and durability, making it highly favored among interior design wood materials because it remains very sturdy even without the use of edge banding during processing.

4. Picomat Wood Plastic Composite

Picomat wood plastic composite is made from PVC plastic powder. Picomat wood plastic has an extremely smooth and hard surface and is often finished with 2K or PU paint. Picomat wood plastic panels have absolute water resistance, so they are often used as interior design materials for areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Picomat wood plastic is also a favored type of interior design wood material due to its excellent fire-resistant capability, as this material inhibits and reduces the spread of fire. Furthermore, the durability of Picomat wood plastic is highly rated; it can withstand harsh environments such as mild acids, alkalis, and wet conditions.

5. Polywood

Polywood is better known as plywood, this interior design material is different from other interior design woods because it is made from square natural bark layers, thinly sliced about 1mm and joined together in the direction of the wood grain and also pressed under high temperature and pressure with adhesives.

The raw materials to produce this type of wood are usually pine, birch, acacia, eucalyptus… with a structure consisting of 3 main parts: the core is thin wood layers, the surface is natural wood and is often combined with specialized glues.

6. CDF (Compact Density Fiberboard)

CDF is an interior design material that is evaluated similarly to Black HDF, which is also a type of fiberboard pressed together at high pressure, and is added with very good moisture-proof and anti-termite additives, so this type of wood is also often used for interior designs that are exposed to high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchen walls, lavabo walls, coffee tables, etc.

Currently, in the market there are many suppliers of interior design wood and imported from many different sources such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Europe, China, Vietnam… The wood produced from reputable manufacturers is of the same quality as natural wood, even more durable. Therefore, when buying industrial wood, you should choose from reputable manufacturers to ensure long-term product quality.
